The Stars exhibition reflects the newly emerging tradition of exhibition dramaturgy, namely the division of space at Galerie Zdeněk Sklenář into separate areas. One of them is the intimate Bird Salon, which is named after the original Baroque frescoes with bird motifs that decorate this historical space.
This bringing together of artists, who may or may not be close to each other in terms of opinion, expression or generation, creates space for a new language, reveals the possibility of new interpretations and contexts for the works as well as for the artists’ own creative approaches. In the case of the Stars exhibition, the gallery’s visitors will find diverse works placed in mutual confrontation and dialogue with each other, such as the representative still-life and figural paintings of Emil Filla shown in conjunction with Jan Zrzavý’s paintings, the intimate confessions of Václav Boštík displayed side-by-side with Zdeněk Sýkora’s line compositions, Toyen and her artificial landscape covered by melting snow next to the Bohumil Kubišta’s portrait of his friend Antonín Matějček or Karel Malich’s hanging sculpture entitled Egg.
It is a comparative exhibition that spans the period from 1910 to 2019. “A new tradition of the Galerie Zdeněk Sklenář is starting in the Bird Salon. Through the unexpected discoveries of artworks, I am creating exhibitions that are synonymous with the best in fine art. The time of creation of works of art and their eras is not limiting. The point is ultimate beauty and discovery,” says the gallerist Zdeněk Sklenář.
